Abstract This paper demonstrates that our extended smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model can successfully simulate multiphase flow in a Humphrey spiral concentrator (HSC) with two phases: powder and water. The powder phase in the model was assumed to be a continuum, as the spacing between particles in this state is much smaller than the typical length scale of flow.
The main process parameters of a typical spiral concentrator are the feed flow rate, feed pulp density and splitter position which influence the performance in the process (Atasoy 1995). Industrial modeling of spiral concentrators for optimal …
Adjustable parameters controlling the separation are: 1. Feed distribution 2. Individual splitter adjustments 3. Feed pulp density 4. Feed rate 5. Wash water rate. Feed distribution. In a plant operation, it is important to maintain a consistent feed rate to the spiral concentrator …

Keywords: Ultra-fine particles, spiral, design, recovery 1. Introduction 1.1 Spirals Spirals are one of the types of equipment which have been designed and built to effect separation of minerals by gravity. Spiral concentrators are simple low energy consuming devices that separate minerals on the basis of density.
The latter in referred to as a dry spiral concentrator and the former is a wet spiral concentrator (Mine-Engineer, 2015). 2.1.1 Wet Spiral Concentrators Wash-Waterless Spirals These types of spirals are the most common in industry today. They are especially used for the concentration of low-grade ores.

Spiral Concentrator Spiral concentrators are modem, high capacity, low cost units developed for the concentration of low grade ores. Spirals consist of a single or double helical sluice wrapped around a central support with a wash water channel and a series of concentrate take-off ports placed at regular intervals along the spiral (Figure 17).
The centrifugal concentrator rotates at a high speed, generating a high "G" force, which can separate small gravity recovery gold (less than 50 microns), which was of previously unrecoverable with traditional mineral jigs, spiral separator, and gravity tables. In recent years, the application of centrifugal force has proved to be an effective technology for recovering fine and heavy minerals.
