If your primary intent is to grind knives, then even the 2" is a bit under-par, it only has a half-horse motor. Most of the knife-making grinders (Baldor, Burr King) have a 1.5 or a 2hp motor, running a 72" belt. For sharpening, the 1" is really, REALLY hard to beat. As in, I don't know if anyone makes something that beats it in belt grinders.
