159 upvotes. Markham. May 12th, 2020 4:09 pm. There should've been a 13mm (1/2") fibreboard installed between the existing garage slab and the driveway during original construction. Since you can't retrofit that, you can use a backer rod and seal the top with an expansion joint sealant.

The gap is about 6" deep just eyeballing. From what the shoring company told me, there shouldn't be any movement since the slab is now sitting on concrete pilings that are between 45 - 55 ft deep. How true that is, I don't know. When they poured the slab, probably 30 years ago, it had about 1/4 in. gap and had rebar drilled into the old slab.
