Kyanite is a metamorphic mineral that occours in schists, gneisses and granite pegamatites. Associated minerals are quartz, feldspar, mica, garnet, corundum and staurolite. Kyanite occurs as bladed and tabular triclinic crystals. Lamellar twinning is common. It has two cleavage directions, one perfect and the other one good-uneven.
ادامه مطلبGarnets do not have any cleavage planes, so when they fracture under stress, sharp, irregular pieces are formed. Hardness. Because the chemical composition of garnet varies, the atomic bonds in some species are stronger than in others.

ادامه مطلبThe difference between a cleavage and a fracture is that a fracture is arbitrary and non-repeatable -- it can occur anywhere on the body of a mineral, in any spatial direction, with little chance of an identical fracture occurring. A cleavage, on the hand, is predictable and repeatable. A mineral can have one or more cleavage planes. A mineral ...
ادامه مطلبCleavage. The way in which a mineral breaks along smooth flat planes is called cleavage. These breaks occur along planes of weakness in the mineral's structure. However, if a mineral breaks along an irregular surface, it does not have cleavage. Fracture. When a …
ادامه مطلبGarnets are most often found in the dodecahedral crystal habit, but are also commonly found in the trapezohedron habit. They crystallize in the cubic system, having three axes that are all of equal length and perpendicular to each other. Garnets do not show cleavage, so when they fracture under stress, sharp irregular pieces are formed.
ادامه مطلبJust as wood is easier to split with the grain than against it, gemstone cleavage is the tendency of certain crystals to break along definite plane surfaces. If there are planes in a crystal structure with relatively weak atomic bonds, the crystal is more likely to break along …

ادامه مطلبAs noted above, quartz exhibits a nearly total lack of cleavage. In between these extremes (of perfect cleavage and lack of cleavage), there are minerals that have good cleavage (e.g. feldspar) and poor cleavage (certain faces on amphibole crystals). Figure 6. Other safe thing to clean garnet is the ultrasonic cleaner but it must not be used against a fractured stone. Garnet can be treated by fracture filling but very rarely.
