Why You Can't Just Seal the Gap Between Your Basement Floor and Wall. It may seem like an obvious solution to simply seal the cove joint to prevent water from breaching into your home. However, it's not that simple. In the short term, a sealant applied along this gap between your basement floor and wall may prevent leakage.
The word "sealant" became more common, and in essence, defined the switch in expectations. Many engineers today think of sealant materials primarily for their ability to prevent water from passing through concrete pavement joints. Joint Sealing Materials. Hot-pour liquid sealants have evolved after many years of research and development.
The sealants are manufactured utilizing a combination of engineered asphalts, polymers, fillers, recycled crumb rubbers, UV inhibitors and adhesion promoters. MACSEAL is recommended for the large-scale sealing of joints and random cracks in Portland cement concrete and asphaltic concrete pavements.

The joint is where the different building elements and materials meet. You have to deal with draining the water first.
